From 1948 Settlement of the Camp Area and Development of the Neustadt District
Barracks converted into homes (1958)
Starting in 1948, expellees and refugees from the former eastern territories of the German Reich found urgently needed residential and commercial space in the former camp area. Their settlement had a particularly lasting effect in Moosburg. The settlers built up a new existence in the barracks with their learned crafts and trades. Within a few years, an industrial site and a housing estate with its own infrastructure were built on the camp site. A new part of town developed from this, today's “Neustadt” of Moosburg.
The barracks could initially be leased by the settlers, and from 1954 they were purchased cheaply and gradually rebuilt or replaced by new buildings. As a result, today the shapes of the former barracks are only recognizable on a few buildings. The street layout, however, still shows the structure of the camp. The street names, on the other hand, remind us of the settlers' origins and homeland.
Reading tip: The living conditions of the people in Moosburg in the post-war period were researched and scientifically documented in our book publication "Zwischen Hakenkreuz und Sternenbanner" (Between Swastika and Star Spangled Banner) by historian Dr. Dominik Reither.
