Stalag Memorial Square

The central place of remembrance in the middle of the former camp area is the Stalag Memorial Square with information boards and the so-called "French Fountain", a fountain stone designed and made by the French sculptor Antoniucci Volti during his imprisonment with a circular relief allegorically representing the 4 major rivers of France. The fountain was installed and inaugurated in 1963 as the first memorial to the camp. In 2015, the square was refurbished and named in memory of the camp.

Address: Böhmerwaldstraße 21 (freely accessible park).

Stalag camp entrance (info point)

This memorial site is located directly in front of the former camp entrance. A view of today's Sudetenlandstraße shows the extent of the camp main road in its full length, as well as the width of the grounds. Here is the best overview of the extent and layout of the camp. Information boards provide an overview of the history. Visitor guided tours, offered by the Stalag Moosburg e.V. association by appointment, also begin here.

Address: Near Sudetenlandstraße 1 (corner of Neustadtstraße).

Oberreit Memorial (former POW cemetery)

Between 1939 and 1945, the approximately 1000 dead of the STALAG VII A POW camp were buried in the former Oberreit POW cemetery. About 800 of the deceased were Soviet prisoners of war, who for ideological reasons had significantly worse prison conditions than the Western Allied soldiers protected by the Geneva Convention. The deceased were reburied in central cemeteries of honor in the 1950s. In 1982, the city acquired the site and built a memorial there, which was refurbished in 2014.

Remaining original barracks (prisoners)

"Sabathiel" Barracks:

Part of the last remaining prisoner barracks, largely unchanged due to its subsequent use as a workshop for carpenter Adolf Sabathiel. There is still controversy about the preservation and use of the barrack, which is in a very poor structural condition, as a memorial site. It is listed as a historical monument. A roof to protect it from the weather was initially erected in April 2020. Investigations for appropriate safeguards are currently underway (as of June 2021).

Address: Egerlandstraße 22 (cannot be entered due to danger of collapse, virtual 3D walk-through)

Remaining original barracks (guards)

Former barracks of the guards:

The barracks of the guards were located about 500 meters from the prison camp. After the war, the buildings served as housing for socially deprived citizens. Three of these barracks are still preserved and are also listed. Their further use or demolition is still under discussion (Video). One part is intended for a future information and documentation center.

Address: Schlesierstraße 1-5 (not allowed to enter).
