Inhalt

The Moosburg internment camp existed from June 1945 until April 1948, when the Americans detained officials of National Socialist Germany, as well as persons they considered a threat to security and suspected war criminals.

Organizers of the Holocaust, a participant in the Wannsee Conference, the leaders of the Nazi "euthanasia program," concentration camp doctors, patrons of Hitler from the aristocracy and business, a top SA leader, Hitler's "court photographer" and his driver, high military officers, administrative officials and judges, thousands of functionaries from all levels of the hierarchy of the Nazi Party and its branches, and members of the resistance - they were all in the Moosburg internment camp.

What were the living conditions in the camp like? How did the denazification of the inmates proceed? What was the attitude of the internees toward National Socialism? The author explores these and other questions. He thus deals with a topic of the immediate post-war period that has received little attention to date. In doing so, he draws on extensive file material from various archives as well as numerous reports from internees.

The internment camps had previously been little documented and could only be experienced in individual testimonials. Reiter's research in Washington, among other places, has brought together many new sources here, which paint a very complex picture of the events in the Moosburg camp. So, these camps were used for "denazification" in order to initiate democratization. However, unclear objectives, inadequate organizational structures, underestimated effort for implementation, different phases of American and German administration led only to limited success and often to injustice. The book thus not only presents another phase of Moosburg's history, but also exemplifies the birth pangs of the young democracy after 1945.
