Ein Kriegsgefangenenlager 1939-1945<\/h4>\n

Stalag VII A in Moosburg was one of the largest German POW camps during World War II. More than 150,000 prisoners were registered there from 1939-45 and deployed in work commands in Wehrkreis VII (southern Bavaria).<\/p>\n

This booklet, published on the 70th anniversary of the camp's liberation, deals for the first time in a scientifically documented way with various aspects of the camp, such as construction and liberation, care of the prisoners, labor deployment, leisure time or contact of the prisoners with the population. The individual chapters provide an overview, but do not claim to be complete, as not all archives and sources could be evaluated at the time of publication.<\/p>\n

2023:<\/strong> The booklet is also published in an English and French translation and is available in bookstores, online stores or directly from the publisher.<\/p>\n

Soviet prisoners of war suffered much worse conditions than the other prisoners during World War II. Although they constituted the second largest group in the POW camp Stalag VII A in Moosburg, their fates have so far often been considered only in generalized terms.<\/p>\n

This publication, \"Auf den Spuren verlorener Identit\u00e4ten\u201d (On the Trail of Lost Identities), shows the ideological situation and the precarious living conditions of the Soviet prisoners of war, as well as the particularities of Stalag VII A. How did the camp management oppose the notorious segregations? How did a resistance group - the B.S.W. - develop its effect beyond southern Bavaria, starting from the Moosburg camp? Newly discovered sources, or sources whose contents and statements have been examined for the first time, with thousands of registration numbers and meticulously kept documents, also open up a view of individual fates. The names of the dead are mentioned again for the first time in decades, and many a face is now visible again in all its individuality.<\/p>\n

Jewish soldiers in German custody were permanently in tension between the protected status as prisoners of war offered to them by the Geneva Convention and their complete lack of rights as Jews in the National Socialist sphere of power.<\/p>\n

The prisoner of war camp Stalag VII A (Moosburg) was a stopover for 300 Polish-Jewish soldiers on their odyssey from the battlefields of Poland to death in the Majdanek extermination camp. Only one Jewish-Polish prisoner survived and appeared as a witness in the trial against Adolf Eichmann in 1961.<\/p>\n

The book traces this path and presents the 301 Polish-Jewish prisoners of war using the index cards created by the Wehrmacht.<\/p>\n
